Four instruments, one big sound.

A chenda melam is a team effort. Here's who you'll hear.

Chenda

The lead drum, played with sticks. Loud, sharp and impossible to ignore.

Ilathalam

The cymbals that keep time, so everyone else can play with confidence.

Kombu

A curved brass horn that rises above the drums and lifts the whole crowd.

Kuzhal

A reed wind instrument that carries the melody through the thunder of the drums.

How a melam builds

A melam never starts at full volume. It begins unhurried, then climbs round after round until the whole street is moving.

Questions people ask us.

How early should we book?

As early as you can. Festival and wedding dates fill up quickly, so send us your date even if the other details aren't final.

Can the melam play during a procession?

Tell us the route and the distance when you enquire, and we'll plan around it.

Do you travel to other towns?

Tell us where the event is. We'll confirm whether we can reach you and what the travel involves.

How long does a performance run?

That depends on the occasion. Tell us what you have in mind and we'll suggest a length that suits it.

Is sending an enquiry the same as booking?

No. An enquiry just starts the conversation. Nothing is confirmed until we've spoken and agreed the details together.
